Another adventure of Captain No Beard is here. Being a Captain is Hard Work is a lesson in listening and to learn from the expertise of those around you. The day started out good on the Flying Dragon. Captain No Beard tells the crew to set sail. But Mongo warns that the seas look rough. Captain No Beard ignores his advice and sails on. With each direction, Captain No Beard is offered other options and suggestions. He ignores their suggestions and gets angry when everyone starts questioning his orders. Soon the ship is in very rough seas and it becomes very dangerous for the crew. Soon Zach is in danger! Will Captain No Beard be able to rescue him before its too late? Will the captain realize that even a good captain needs help sometimes?

I love the Captain No Beard series and this book is a great addition. The key lesson in the story is that no one knows everything and friends are a good source to get the information we do not know. I also loved that at the end of the story a glossary of the different types of clouds and what they indicate in the weather. Being a Captain is Hard Work is a great addition to any library for the great lessons and fun adventures.

Another great addition in the Captain No Beard series

Captain No Beard: A Flag for the Flying Dragon by Carole P. Roman is another great addition to the Captain No Beard series. Everyone is busy working at their various jobs on the ship. But baby Zachary doesn’t have a job to do and no one wants him to help with his/her job. Captain No Beard must find a solution. He realizes that the ship doesn’t have a flag and he grabs a piece of cloth and makes Zachary keeper of the flag. Now, everyone has an important job on the Flying Dragon.

A Flag for the Flying Dragon is another great addition to the Captain No Beard series. I love that this story teaches the very important lesson of working together with everyone’s job is just as important as another. I highly recommend this book and the rest of the series for any family and classroom library.

A great new story about the importance lesson about stealing

Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis by Carole P. Roman is another great book in this series. The theme of this story is stealing and how wrong it is to take something without permission.

The captain and his crew have approached an ice mountain and the captain wants to take it home. The crew is upset that he wants to take something without permission. The crew refuses to help. Then the aurora borealis fills the sky and the captain decides he wants that instead. The crew decides to recreate the aurora borealis so that the captain have to take the one from the sky.

I enjoyed this book for its use of imagination to teach about the aurora borealis as well as the theme of stealing is wrong. Children will enjoy the characters and the beautiful illustrations. I highly recommend this book for any family and classroom library.

The Captain No Beard series: fun and imagination mixed with great lessons

Today, I have five books from the Captain No Beard series by Carole P. Roman.

First, Captain No Beard: An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate’s Life is the story of Alexander aka Captain No Beard and his pirate friends. Hallie, his cousin and first mate, Mongo the monkey, Linus the Lion and Fribbit the Frog. In this story, the crew aboard their ship, The Flying Dragon, must battle a fierce storm.

Second, Pepper Parrot’s Problem with Patience is a story about the new member of the crew and her inability to follow directions and her frustrations that follow. The captain orders drills to practice in case of emergency but Pepper the Parrot gets turn around and goes in the opposite direction of the rest of the crew. She yells and screams that she can’t get it right until Hallie stops and helps her. The lesson at the end of the story is not to be afraid to ask for help.

Third, Stuck in the Doldrums is a lesson about sharing. The crew is marooned on an island and they begin to play on the beach. Captain No Beard demands and decides since he is captain he is right and others are wrong. His behavior leads the others to not want to play with him so he goes off on his own. He is determined that he can do it himself. When a great squid attacks the ship, he calls for help but the others are willing to help at first. Captain No Beard learns that it is important to share and take others’ feelings into considerations in order to play together.

Fourth, The Treasure of Snake Island is a story about the search for buried treasure and the discovery of a great and priceless treasure. Armed with a map, the crew sails for Snake Island and dig where X marks the spot. Inside the chest, they find books!

Finally, Strangers on the High Seas is a lesson about strangers. Captain No Beard and his crew run into a strange ship and the crew calls out to them. Should they approach the strange boat or keep their distance?

The Captain No Beard series is a great series of books which captures the imagination of children as well as teach important lessons about sharing, strangers, and teamwork. The illustrations are beautiful and capture the story wonderfully. I highly recommend this series to families and classrooms.

Captain No Beard The Crew Goes Coconuts: a great book about the importance of no bullying!

Another adventure in the Captain No Beard series. I haven’t read any other titles in this series but after reading the new book, The Crew Goes Coconut! I am eager to read the rest of the series.

The book opens with Captain No Beard and his crew as they are on an island with no more juice. Each member of the crew begins to blame the new member aboard the Flying Dragon. Matie, the goat, is the scapegoat and the crew begins to make fun of her. This upsets Matie and Captain No Beard must come in and teach the lesson that everyone is different and it is not right to make fun of others’ flaws.

This is a great book about bully, how it can start so simply and barrel out of control. It is a simple story to teach children that bullying is not just fun and teasing. It hurts the person being bullied and it doesn't make you cool or popular. With beautiful illustrations and a great story, children will learn an important lesson. I highly recommend this book!
