Insects, Ivy and Investigations by Tonya Kappes is the seventeenth book in the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mystery series. More turmoil for Mae as Alicia Becker shows up at The Milkery door. Beaten, bruised and openly hostile toward Mae, Alicia was one of Mary Elizabeth’s foster children after Mae left town. Mae is immediately suspicious of Alicia and when she is found over the dead body of Craig Sutton, her suspicions rise even more. Craig Sutton is the ex-boyfriend of Alicia. Why was he in Normal? Did Alicia kill him or is Alicia being set up? Despite her misgivings, Mae and the Laundry Ladies set out to solve this case. 

Wow! Mae is dealing with a lot in this story. First, the open hostility from Alicia and her questionable motives for being in Normal. And second, her relationship with Hank is at a crossroads. She is unsure where they’ll end up. Then add a murder investigations which will affect them all. At the beginning, I was irritated with Mae’s attitude but by the end of the book, my heart was breaking for her. I’m looking forward to seeing how her relationship with Hank plays out and their future in Normal. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, I recommend Insects, Ivy and Investigations and the rest of the Camper and Criminals series.

Paddlers, Poison and Promises: a murder investigations with political intrigue.

Paddlers, Poison and Promises by Tonya Kappes is the sixteenth book in the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mysteries series. Realtor Chelsea O’Connell is not a popular person in Normal. She is helping bring more development to the Daniel Boone National Park when the residents don’t want it and aren’t happy. So when she is found dead, there is no shortage of suspects. Rumors swirl of affairs, feuds and backdoor deals only adds to the suspect list. On top of a murder investigation, Detective Hank Sharp has concerns about the department cuts and possibly outsourcing his job. As Mae and her Laundry Club Ladies begin their investigations, Mae is unsure if they should get involved or let Hank solve it on his own in order to prove his worth to the department? 

This series has been fun, enjoyable reads. However, Paddlers, Poison and Promises fell a little flat. It was hard to get into this mystery and the rest of the story. First, character information changed from previous books to this one. Second, a character’s name changes from one name to another by the end. Third, the issue with the department and Hank’s job wasn’t really flushed out and the story ended on a cliffhanger, leaving the resolution for a future book. Overall, the story was a good addition to the series but didn’t have the same feel as the previous books. I hope this isn’t the standard for future books. If you have enjoyed the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mysteries series, you may enjoy Paddlers, Poison and Promises.

Ropes, Riddles and Robberies: one case brings the past front and center

Ropes, Riddles and Robberies is the fifteenth book in the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mysteries series by Tonya Kappes. Solving crimes has become a major activity for Mae and Laundry Club ladies. Their next case will be more challenging. Mae has been thinking about the fire that took her family’s lives and more and more she has been having vivid memories about that night. She is more and more determined to discover what happened that night. With the help of her friends, Mae heads to her hometown to prove the fire wasn’t an accident. As their investigation heats up on this cold case, someone wants to make sure Mae and her friends never find out the truth. 

Ropes, Riddles and Robberies is more than just solving a cold case. It is going home, confronting one’s past and finding peace leaving it behind. The mystery had many twists and turns with the reveal who the killer was came as a complete surprise! I loved how Mae’s friends gathered together and helped her solve this case. It wasn’t just another case to them. Ropes, Riddles and Robberies is a great addition to the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mysteries series. If you have enjoyed this series, you will enjoy Ropes, Riddles and Robberies. If you haven’t started this series, I highly recommend it! The Campers and Criminals Cozy Mystery series is filled with great afternoon reads!

Gear, Grills and Guns: another normal adventure in Normal, Kentucky

Gear, Grills and Guns is the thirteen book in the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. Mae West is the newest appointed member on the National Park Committee and she is taking the job seriously. She feels the need to prove she deserves to be there. She walks the new trails and she brings a big car show to Normal to fill in the slower fall month. But when Wendell Holliday, a car show participant, is found dead and a fire at a campground has Mae and the ladies of the Laundry Club back at work. The suspect list seems to be short. Is someone trying to cover up one crime with another? 

Gear, Grills and Guns was a fast read. While the suspect list was short and there was an obvious suspect number 1. However, after having read many mysteries before, I had a nagging feeling there was something more and, of course, there was! While I have been enjoying this series, this book seemed to be out of character for the series. The car show, the murder and the fire seemed to be more of a background story as Mae is dealing more with her past trauma. But I loved how tender Hank was with Mae as she dealt with the overwhelming emotions. Overall, I enjoyed Gear, Grills and Guns and I look forward to the rest of this series.

Kickbacks, Kayaks and Kidnapping: competition and jealousy ends in murder and kidnapping

 Kickbacks, Kayaks and Kidnapping is the twelfth book in the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. Mae West has found a home in the small southern town of Normal, Kentucky. Despite her rocky start, she has become a beloved member of the town and her efforts to help the rundown Happy Trails Campground thrive have paid off. And her efforts are being noticed. The campground is in the running for the Campground Hospitality Award of the Daniel Boone National Park, but she has been offered a vacant seat on the park’s committee. To add to her efforts, she has organized Paddle Fests and a kayak competition which brings champion and Olympian kayaker Bryce Anderson to Normal. Everything comes crashing down when Bryce is discovered dead. When his death is ruled a homicide, Mae and the Laundry Club ladies once again put their sleuthing skills to use to find a killer. 

How many times can the reputation of the Happy Trails Campground and Normal be in jeopardy? A few times in fact. Once again, a murder linked to the campground throws a monkey wrench into the thriving plans. Mae immediately jumps into action and discovers a twisted trail of clues and a long list of suspects. This mystery kept me on my toes and I wasn’t sure who the killer was until the reveal. I enjoyed how Mae, despite her sleuthing reputation, stays humble and her motivation is simply to help Normal to continue to thrive. It’s not her fault that murders seem to happen in and around her campground. Overall, I enjoyed Kickbacks, Kayaks and Kidnapping. It was a nice addition to the series and I look forward to next adventure in Normal. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, I recommend Kickbacks, Kayaks and Kidnapping as well as the rest of the Campers and Criminals series.

Tents, Trails and Turmoil: murder, tourism and a secret in the forest

Tents, Trails and Turmoil is the eleventh book in the Campers and Criminals series by Tonya Kappes. Tourism is important to Normal and the Daniel Boone National Park and it is important to Mae West. Nothing stops tourists like a dead body. When Yaley Woodard, a local tour guide, is found dead at the Happy Trails Campground, Mae is determined to find the killer before it ruins the upcoming tourist season. With a few suspects on the list, there is  much to keep them busy. As Mae and the Laundry Club ladies investigate, they learn that Yaley’s death caused much more turmoil than they could have imagined. Such turmoil that maybe her death is linked to someone trying to close down the tourism for good? 

Tents, Trails, and Turmoil was a fast and enjoyable read. With each book, this series keeps getting better and better. I love the continued growth and development of Hank and Mae’s relationship. Added to the stress of saving the tourism and her campground business, Mae is worried about Dottie, her office manager and close friend. Even though Dottie was grating at the beginning of the series, she has grown on me and I worried along with Mae, hoping nothing seriously wrong with Normal’s favorite chain-smoker. Overall, I am loving this series. It has become my go-to cozy mystery series and I am now eagerly awaiting the next book on my To Be Read List! I recommend Tents, Trails and Turmoil and the previous books in this series!

Sunsets, Sabbatical, and Scandal: a dating app, a hacker stealing money and murder

Sunsets, Sabbatical and Scandal by Tonya Kappes is the tenth book in the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mystery series. Some of the local single gals are on a dating app and someone has hacked into several bank accounts and drained the funds. But the smalltown of Normal, Kentucky is shocked and shaken when one of their own is found dead on the floor of the diner. Mae and the Laundry Club ladies aren’t about to sit idly by as a murderer is on the loose. When a connection to Mae’s hometown pops up in the investigation, she must face a past she has tried to keep away. Who has murdered their beloved friend and citizen? And who is their hacker? Are they one and the same? 

Tonya Kappes has really found a rhythm with this cozy mystery series. When I first started the series, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy continuing. But I kept going and now I’m hooked. Learning more about Mae’s past was heartbreaking. The discovery of the victim was shocking; however the capture of the killer was oh so satisfying. I enjoyed seeing more of Hank and Mae’s relationship become closer and closer. I am thoroughly enjoying this series and I look forward to the many books in the future. These books are a great way to spend a lazy afternoon reading and so engaging that you will have a hard time putting them down. I recommend Sunsets, Sabbatical and Scandal.

Valleys, Vehicles, and Victims: wedding drama and old feuds

 Valleys, Vehicles and Victims is the ninth book in the Camper and Criminals series by Tonya Kappes. The gorgeous colors of fall have painted the Daniel Boone National Forest. The picturesque beauty is a popular choice for weddings. When a wedding party shows up at the Happy Trails Campground, Mae is thrilled. However, that feeling doesn’t last long as she recognizes the bride’s parents. They are her past. A past she has desperately tried to escape. But this family isn’t any old high society people. They are Tom and Misty Moon, the owners of the famous Moonbucks Coffee Company! Pushing aside their past association, Mae is determined to provide the couple with an amazing wedding of their dreams. There is someone else in town that has bad blood with the Moons, specifically Tom. Gert Hobson, the owner of Trails Coffee Shop, swears that Tom stole her recipe that became the special Moonbucks blend. A public fight and a very public threat makes Gert a prime suspect when one of the members of the wedding party is found murdered. It’s up to Mae  and the Laundry Club ladies to clear their friend’s name. 

This series has been so much fun and each book gets better and better. I loved the opening pages as Ms. Kappes paints the beautiful fall colors of Kentucky and I desperately wish I could be there to see it. Right off the bat, as the drama stirs around the wedding party, there isn’t a shortage of suspects when the victim is discovered. I love how Mae rallies behind Gert and is determined to prove her innocence even if it puts her in danger. I also love that it’s never the first suspect or even the one the characters suspect. The twist comes in complete surprise! I even had to turn back and find the subtle clue that I had read over. I also enjoyed reading the camping tips Ms Kappes included at the end. They will be handy if and when I’m ever camping. Also the recipes at the end sound so yummy! Overall, Valleys, Vehicles and Victims was so much fun to read that I could not put it down. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, you will enjoy the Campers and Criminals series. I highly recommend Valleys, Vehicles and Victims!

Assailants, Asphalt, and Alibis: a tall tale, a treasure hunt and murder

Assailants, Asphalt, and Alibis is the eighth book in the Campers and Criminals series by Tonya Kappes. During a night of telling stories around the campfire, one storyteller tells the tall tales of John Swift and his hidden treasure. Every year groups of people follow maps in the hopes of finding the long lost treasures. Mae and some of the ladies from the Laundry Club join the annual John Swift Excursion. Hank thinks the legend is gibberish and mentions the treasure hunts are cursed. Not deterred, the ladies set out and are enjoying themselves until not one but two bodies are discovered! Is there a murderer among them or has the curse struck again? 

I love tall tales, local legends and the people who get behind them whether they believe it or just like the fun of it. That’s the two groups in this story. One group wholeheartedly believes in the legend and search every year and others enjoy the hoopla around it. This year, one who wholeheartedly believes in the legend is found dead and there is no shortage of suspects. When another body is found, fear follows as Mae wonders is it a murderer or the curse? The twist revealed at the end was a complete surprise, one I thoroughly enjoyed! This series is a fun read, easy for an afternoon or two of reading. I highly recommend Assailants, Asphalts and Alibis.

Hitches, Hideouts and Homicide: what does an old bank robbery and a new murder have in common?

Hitches, Hideouts and Homicide by Tonya Kappes is the seventh book in the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mystery series. To celebrate the opening of the new Old Train Station motel’s grand opening, everyone is excited for the Hoe Down. The fun evening comes to an abrupt end when a sudden storm brings lightning and knocks out the power. And it always seems that Mae West finds herself in familiar territory as she discovers the body of Jay Russel, a local trainer. As she follows the clues and rumors of an old bank robbery and shady business deals, she discovers the motive for motive is much, much more dangerous. Can she discover the link between the murder and the rumors before it’s too late? 

How can one small town have so much crime? It seems to be normal for Normal, Kentucky. Luckily, Mae West and her Laundry Club friends are on the case. Despite the disapproval of her boyfriend, Sheriff Hank Sharp, Mae can’t help herself as her curiosity pulls her in. Even after one of her dearest friends is implicated in the murder, Mae knows she cannot stop until she finds the truth. This series is filled with fun, exciting suspense as Mae follows the trail with twists and turns as she, and readers, are on the hunt for the killer. If you enjoy a fun small town setting with a bit of mystery, I highly recommend Hitches, Hideouts and Homicide as well as the rest of the series.

Canyons, Caravans, and Cadavers: murder, rumors and conspiracy

Canyons, Caravans and Cadavers by Tonya Kappes is the sixth book in the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mystery series. Mae West is asked to teach a semester on small town economics as she helped the economy in Normal thrive as she revamped the Happy Trails Campground. She is thrilled as it is a far cry from her image when she first arrived in town. But when a teacher and archery coach is found dead at the campground, it puts a damper on the campground and her excitement to teach. Of course, Mae begins to investigate and more bodies are piling up. She learns they are all tied to the school. Can she discover the killer’s identity and uncover a conspiracy? 

Tonya Kappes’ Campers and Criminals Cozy Mysteries are so fun to read. I thoroughly enjoy Mae as she gains more and more confidence, leaving her past behind her and finally finding a true home. Her eclectic group of friends, known as the Laundry Club, joins her in her sleuthing activities. The identity of the killer was a shocker as well as the motive. This book also introduces Hank’s sister, Ellis, and it will be interesting the role or drama she plays in future books. I highly recommend Canyons, Caravans and Cadavers as well as the rest of the series. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, you will enjoy the Campers and Criminals series and Canyons, Caravans and Cadavers.

Motorhomes, Maps and Murder: another crazy adventure in Normal, Kentucky!

Motorhomes, Maps and Murder by Tonya Kappes is the fifth book in the Camper and Criminals Cozy Mystery series. Welcome back to Normal, Kentucky, where nothing is normal! As the town prepares for the local Civil War reenactment of the Battle of Camp Wildcat, Greaser Gadie, a notorious killer escapes from prison! The whole town is on high alert as Greaser vowed to get his revenge on the jurors who convicted him. After the reenactment, two of the actors are discovered to be not acting at all. They were murdered! And a motorhome was discovered to be stolen from the Happy Trails Campground. Are they connected? Is Greaser truly in town to take his revenge? Mae follows the leads to recover the stolen motorhome as her hunky detective boyfriend, Hank Sharp, investigates the murders. Will their investigations merge into one? 

Wow! This series just keeps getting better and better. As Mae has truly embraced the small town of Normal, she is not about to let anything or anyone destroy her new home, especially a motorhome thief! I love Mae’s tenacity and her unique and quirky group of friends. This story has such twists that I didn’t see coming! Even though I knew Mae would figure it out, the story definitely kept me on my toes as I could not put it down! I also enjoyed seeing Mae and Hank’s relationship develop more and become more public. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series and more of Mae’s adventures in Normal. If you enjoy cozy mysteries and a quirky small town, I highly recommend Motorhomes, Maps and Murder as well as the previous books in the series.

Forest, Fishing and Forgery: more hijinks in Normal, Kentucky

Forest, Fishing and Forgery is the third book in the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. It’s Labor Day weekend in Normal and the Happy Trails Campground is busier than ever. Unfortunately, a rumor circulates that the Daniel Boone National Park is in danger of being closed due to a drought. The park closure would devastate the campground as well as Normal. The residents are scrambling for business ideas in order to survive the possible shutdown. When a local resident with the power to shut down the park is found dead, there is no shortage of suspects. Added to the drama a hiker is missing and another local is found dead. Are they connected? It’s up to Mae to find out! 

I like the alliteration in the titles of this series; however, I failed to see how forests, fishing and forgery fit into this story. Granted some of the story takes place in the forests of the national park. However, most of the action takes place in the campground and in town. And there was little fishing or forgery occurring. The mystery was nice but given the title, I was expecting a crime other than murder. How many murders can occur in one small town? Overall, I enjoyed Forests, Fishing, and Forgery. It was a quick read for a cold, bundle up kind of morning. And I look forward to reading the rest of the series. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, you may enjoy Forests, Fishing and Forgery.

Deserts, Driving and Derelicts: returning to Normal, Kentucky where nothing is normal

Deserts, Driving, and Derelicts is the second book in the Campers and Criminals series by Tonya Kappes. Readers return to Normal, Kentucky where nothing is normal. Mae West has settled into the community and her role as the owner of The Happy Trails Campground, a local campground, nestled in the Daniel Boone National Park. Suddenly, Mae finds herself face to face with someone from her past and another murder investigation. She tries to stay out of it but her own curiosity keeps pulling her back in. Mae won’t stop until the murderer is found. Now that she has found a community to love and belong to, she will do what she must to protect her new home. Can she find the killer before he strikes again?

 Deserts, Driving and Derelicts is filled with the hijinks of the colorful and quirky residents of Normal as they once again have a murderer in their midst. From rumors and petty feuds, everyone has an opinion about who the killer is but they are right? The identity of the killer surprised me but made sense as the motive was revealed. It was a quick and fun read for a lazy afternoon. There were moments of laughter and gasps of surprise. I look forward to reading the rest of the series and read about the town’s future adventures. If you enjoy a cozy mystery filled with quirky characters, I highly recommend Deserts, Driving and Derelicts. I would recommend starting with book 1 Beaches, Bungalows and Burglaries.

Strung Out to Die: who framed Holly?

Strung Out to Die is the first book in the Divorced Divas mystery series by Tonya Kappes. Life for Holly Harper is slowly but surely getting back on track after her divorce. She has her craft story, The Beaded Dragonfly, and pet pig, Willow. She and fellow divorcees call themselves the Divorced Divas and gather together for food, wine and crafts. They also help each other discover new and creative ways to seek revenge against their ex-husbands. It’s no secret that Holly’s ex-husband, Sean Harper, and local wealthy bachelor, Doug Sloan, do not get along. When Doug is discovered dead inside The Beaded Dragonfly, Holly is determined to discover who killed him and is framing her in the process. 

Strung Out to Die is a different mystery story from Tonya Kappes. It’s a more involved and deeper story. True to Tonya Kappes’ style, there are a lot of zany and colorful characters especially Ms. Agnes Pearl, a 80-something wealthy widow who is as eccentric as they come. At the beginning of the story, Holly is still deeply wounded and unsure of herself since her divorce but she is determined to make it on her own. By the end of the book, she is definitely stronger and more self-assured. The killer reveal was a bit of a shocker and one I didn’t see coming. Overall, I enjoyed Strung Out to Die and I’m looking forward to future books in this series.

Scene of the Grind: small town, coffee and murder

Scene of the Grind is the first book in the Killer Coffee Cozy Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. Roxanne “Roxy” Bloom has returned to Honey Springs, Kentucky after her bitter divorce. She opens the first coffee house, The Bean Hive, in the tourist lakefront town. There is excitement in the air as the town is updating its boardwalk businesses in order to increase tourism. Excitement turns to suspicions when Roxy discovers Alexis Roarke dead in her shop, the Crooked Cat Bookstore. Roxy’s Aunt Maxi is an immediate suspect as she owns the building and Maxi had a very public argument with Alexis over the rent. As the gossip heats up, Roxy decides to uncover the killer’s identity to prove that her aunt is not the perpetrator but will her investigation risk her life too? 

Scene of the Grind was an enjoyable cozy mystery that kept me guessing until the end. It also had an element of a second chance romance between Roxy and her boyfriend from her teens, Patrick. As with most mystery stories, the first obvious suspect isn’t always the real killer, but I wouldn’t always bank on that because mystery authors like to throw curve balls. The identity of the killer in Scene of the Grind wasn’t on my radar at all. When I looked back on the clues, there was one that jumped out at me as an “aha moment” after the killer was revealed. Overall, I enjoyed Scene of the Grind and look forward to reading more of this series. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, I recommend Scene of the Grind.

Beaches, Bungalows and Burglaries: a fun cozy mystery

Beaches, Bungalows & Burglaries is the first book in the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. Thirty-one year old Mae West finds herself homeless, friendless and penniless after her husband, Paul, is imprisoned for a Ponzi scheme. The only thing to her name is a tourist campground, Happy Trails, in Normal, Kentucky, and an RV to live in. By the looks of the brochure, the campground is a paradise with plush Kentucky bluegrass and a crystal clear lake. She forms a plan to take a little vacation while she finds a buyer. When she arrives, it is clear the campground is nothing like the brochure with the bluegrass dried up and the lake is murky with green slime. To make matters worse Mae discovers that many of the residents’ invested with Paul and lost their savings. The reception she gets is less than warm. But when Paul has escaped from prison and found dead, murdered, in the Happy Trails lake, Mae becomes suspect number one! Can she clear her name, find the real killer and prove to the residents of Normal that she is not like her husband? 

Beaches, Bungalows and Burglaries is a fun, fast read. I’m still fairly new to the cozy mystery genre, I would say it is a mystery that one reads for fun and not to take too seriously. I read many criticisms of this book, especially how things were too outrageous to be real. I don’t know about you, but one of the reasons I read is to have fun and suspend reality for a time and this book did that for me. I enjoyed the quirky residents of Normal as they welcome and then “unwelcome” Mae once they realize who she is. Mae works hard to convince them she is not like her husband. Overall, I enjoyed Mae and her desire to right the wrongs her husband did regardless if she was at fault or not. Although the constant references to the famous actress Mae shares her name did get tiresome. I enjoyed Beaches, Bungalows and Burglaries and I look forward to reading the rest of the Campers and Criminals series. If you are looking for a fun cozy mystery, I recommend Beaches, Bungalows, and Burglaries.

Stamped Out: a Cozy Mystery in a small town

Stamped Out by Tonya Kappes is the first book in the Mail Carrier Cozy Mystery series. Bernadette Butler is the local mail carrier for the small town of Sugar Creek Gap. Along her route, she hears the rumors and whispers of hidden secrets and obsessions. One day, she learns that the beloved Sugar Creek Gap Country Club is being sold and turned into condos. The developer is her good friend, Mac Tabor, and he’s public enemy number 1! The entire town is against the development and is doing all they can to stop it. Chuck Shilling, the majority owner of the country club, and Mac have a very public fight. When Chuck is found dead, Mac becomes the only suspect. However, Bernadette knows that Mac didn’t do it and she is determined to prove his innocence and find the real killer. 

Cozy mysteries are a new genre for me. For those who don’t know, cozy mysteries or “cozies” are a crime fiction in which the main character is an amateur detective and most of the sex and violence occurs off stage. For example, Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple and TV’s Jessica Fletcher from Murder, She Wrote (1984-1996). Stamped Out is my first book by Tonya Kappes and it was an enjoyable read with fun characters. I enjoyed Bernadette from the very beginning and I loved how she sprung into action to prove Mac’s innocence. Of course, the first suspect isn’t always the real killer but the reveal of the killer was surprising!  Stamped Out is a perfect choice for a laid back weekend or beach read. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Kappes’ cozy mysteries. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, you will enjoy Stamped Out.
