The Planner: a friends to lovers military romance

The Planner is the second book in the Brides of Beaufort series by Jess Mastorakos. Will Paxton is Paul Bristol’s best friend and his family has been Will’s family since childhood. His sister, Aria, is off limits. Not just because she is Paul’s little sister; but because she deserves better than someone like him. However, that didn’t stop him from falling in love with her. Will pushed his feelings aside and had become a master at hiding them from everyone. She’s fierce, feisty and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. It is getting harder and harder to hide. Now that he is stationed back home and they are spending more and more time together, it is getting harder and harder to hide his feelings. One desperate kiss brings those buried feelings up and he doesn't even want to hide anymore.  What does Aria feel? If he pursues a relationship, will he lose their friendship and the only family he has? 

The Brides of Beaufort series is so good and The Planner is a story of found family, love and finding purpose and worthiness in love. I loved Will’s character. Will comes from a broken family and has found love and acceptance with the Bristols, his childhood neighbors. He and Paul joined the Marines together and he has become a worthy leader of those in lower rank. He looks out for those who need help. I understand his concerns about expressing his feelings and losing the only family he has. I also loved Aria’s character especially after Will expresses his feelings and she expresses hers. She is the voice of reason and encouragement for Will. They worked so well together that they were surprised that the people around them were thinking they belonged together. Overall, I enjoyed this story so much and I am looking forward to continuing the series. If you enjoy friends to lovers, military romance, I highly recommend The Planner.

Into The Tide: a brother's best friend, friends to lovers romance

Into the Tide is the first book in the Cottonwood Cove series by Laura Pavlov. Lila James is Hugh Reynolds’ best friend’s little sister and completely off-limits. She comes home for the summer after graduating from college and her brother, Travis, asks him to hire her at his restaurant. Of course, Hugh says yes. There isn’t anything he wouldn’t do for Lila or Travis. However, it becomes complicated when he realizes that Lila has grown into a beautiful woman and she asks for a favor of her own. She wants him to help her fulfill a summer bucket list including losing her V-card. She’s only here for the summer and promises she won’t fall for him. They can remain friends at the end of the summer and it can be their secret. With so much at stake, how can he agree? But then every man has his breaking point. How can he refuse her? 

From the very beginning, Into the Tide is filled with drama, flirty banter, laughs and smiles with plenty of spiciness. I enjoyed Hugh as the protective man who struggles to see Lila as his best friend’s little sister. While Lila is nonchalant about her request, Hugh knows better and yet is very tempted. I enjoyed Lila as a woman who is trying to break free from her family’s past and wants to show the town and the world that she is a woman who can stand on her own two feet. She has a fight in her and I cheered as she fought to be her own person. I also enjoyed their supporting characters and I hope to see their own love stories in the series. Overall, I enjoyed this story and I look forward to the rest of the series. If you enjoy brother’s best friend, friends to lovers romance, I recommend Into the Tide.

The Proposal: a clean military friends to lovers romance

The Proposal is the first book in the Brides of Beaufort series by Jess Mastorakos. Paul Bristol has been friends with Shelby Thompson since grade school; however he fell in love with her in high school. However, she firmly placed him in the friend zone. He settled on being her best friend. Now as a Marine who jumps out of airplanes for fun, he is not afraid to take risks, except where Shelby is concerned. When his public proposal to his girlfriend ends with rejection, he learns that proposing to the wrong woman because you can’t have the right one is never a good idea. However, Shelby is hiding a secret. She loves Paul as well but living with a life threatening condition, she doesn’t want to be a burden. Shelby has always had Paul’s heart, can he convince her to trust him with hers? 

The Proposal is a clean romance with plenty of drama, banter and deep issues. From the very beginning, I enjoyed Shelby and Paul’s characters. Shelby is learning to deal with a life threatening condition. I had never heard of this condition and the author does a great job explaining the condition without being overly technical. I loved Paul as a man who knows what he wants. I love how he shows that he wants Shelby and that supporting her as she deals with her condition is not a burden. Together, they were sweet. I also enjoyed their supporting characters and hope they get their own stories in the future. The great gesture at the end is very sweet and romantic. Overall, I enjoyed this story and I look forward to the rest of the series. If you enjoy clean military romance, I highly recommend The Proposal.

Noble Intent: a steamy friends to lovers romance with lots of fun banter and heavy emotions

Noble Intent is the first book in the Rapturous Intent series by Cadence Keys. Trent Bridger is the lead singer of Rapturous Intent, a chart topping rock band, and lives the rock and roll dream. However, something is missing. Then he runs into Becka Edmonson, a woman he knew as a child and she knows him and they easily fall back into their childhood friendship. Soon, Trent realizes that Becka is everything he has been looking for but he is not willing to sacrifice their friendship. After one night of passion, he finds himself choosing between the friend who has grounded him and the woman who lights a fire in him. Even when Becka acknowledges she has always hoped for something more, can they take that chance? Could he have both a friend and a lover? Can his noble intent to keep his distance mean he is also making a biggest mistake? 

Noble Intent is a steamy friends to lovers romance with sweet memories. The story also deals with heavy topics of addiction, parental abandonment and feelings of inadequacy with lots and lots of emotions. Connected to the author’s other series, the LA Wolves, Noble Intent grabs readers from the opening chapter and leads them on a wild ride of emotions, personal growth and romance. I loved Trent and Becka. Their playful banter was fun and the chemistry between them was undeniable. I wasn’t expecting the emotional topics but it added depth to the characters’ past and their present choices. My heart broke for both characters as they discuss their past and deal with how those events inform their present. It was definitely something I could relate to. I enjoyed the connectedness with the other series. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. I highly recommend Noble Intent.

True North: a friends to lovers romance with plenty of emotions

True North is the first book in the North Brothers series by Amy Knupp. Cole North has always felt like the odd man out. With a high IQ, he falters when it comes to personal relationships. Years ago, he left his rightful position in the family business and began a successful career in construction instead. Cole is the foreman for Sierra Lowell, owner of Dunn and Lowell, a remodeling company. She is creative, hardworking and likes to think outside the box. She has one rule: do not mix business with pleasure. When a last minute break up leaves her without a date for her sister’s wedding. Cole surprises her and himself when he offers to be her fake date for the night. When their evening turns into a family emergency, Sierra sees a side of Cole she never knew and the line between boss and foreman becomes blurry. Can Cole go from her right hand man to the right man for her? 

True North is friends to lovers romance with lots of sweet moments, plenty of angst and filled with emotions. I enjoyed Sierra and Cole from the beginning and wondered what in Cole’s past left him determined to be a loner for the rest of his life. There is a moment when Cole comes to terms with a past he can’t change and words he cannot take back, I cried. I wasn’t expecting tears in this romance. It was a beautiful scene with great descriptions. I loved Sierra’s confidence, her ability to stand up for herself and call Cole out on his self-defeating behavior. I also loved the banter between Cole and his brothers. I enjoyed the sisterly bond between Sierra and her sister. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. If you enjoy a friends to lovers romance with lots of emotions, I highly recommend True North.

Taming 7: when the lovable class clown hides a dark and terrible secret

Taming 7 is the fifth book in the Boys of Tommen series by Chloe Walsh. Claire Biggs and Gerard “Gibsie” Gibson have been best friends since childhood. She is the sunshine who sees the good in everyone, especially Gibsie. She always sees a side of him that no one else doesn’t see. Gibsie is the ultimate and yet lovable class clown. The one to crack a joke when things get too serious. But behind his goofball facade, Gibsie hides a dark secret, a secret he is determined to reveal to no one. As they enter another year of school, storm clouds are rolling in and his secret is getting harder and harder to keep. As their relationship comes to a crossroad, they take a chance for something more, however, Claire is frustrated that Gibsie is still holding back. When the truth is revealed, will their friendship survive? Will it blossom to something stronger or be lost forever? 

The Boys of Tommen series dives into dark subject matters and Taming 7 is no different. From the very first book, Gibsie has been a favorite character of mine. The Ride or Die friend with a heart of gold, yet no one suspects that he is drowning his pain in laughter. I was not expecting the depth of Gibsie’s secret. While I recommend reading Taming 7 and the earlier books of the Boys of Tommen series, I strongly urge readers to read the author’s notes and trigger warnings in the beginning. This story is not for the faint of heart. My heart broke for Gibsie and I cried as he dealt with the revelation of his secret. I am looking forward to more of the Boys of Tommen series. If you enjoy friends-to-lovers, angsty New adult stories, I highly recommend Taming 7 and the rest of the Boys of Tommen series.

Roughing the Kicker: a friends to lovers sports romance with a happily ever after

Roughing the Kicker is the first book in the Denver Mountain Lions series by Emily Silver. Tenley Rhodes has been in love with Jackson Fields since the ninth grade. However, he was her best friend and she was the girl next door. Ten years later, he is the star kicker for the Denver Mountain Lions. When an injury places him on the sideline, he calls her for help. She moves in with him in order to help him. With Jackson depending on her for everything, she is determined to keep her feelings a secret. However, with every touch sends butterflies to her stomach and fires through her veins. Little does she know, Jackson is beginning to see her differently, will he reveal it has been her all along? Will they be willing to risk their friendship to find a love they are both looking for? 

I’m a sucker for a good sports romance. Roughing the Kicker is a sweet, steamy friends to lovers sports romance. There are lots of heart, sweet moments, laughter, banter and steamy moments. The interactions between Jackson and Tenley are great. The build up to them confessing their feelings was wonderful and sigh-worthy. I loved both characters and read eagerly to see them get their happily ever after. There is a third act break up; but the grand gesture is cute and heartwarming. I closed the book with lots of smiles. The secondary characters were great and I hope they get their own stories in the series. Overall, I enjoyed this story and I am looking forward to the rest of the series. If you enjoy a friends to lovers sports romance, I recommend Roughing the Kicker.

Mistletoe Between Friends: a friends to lovers, fake dating Christmas romance

Mistletoe Between Friends by Samantha Chase is a Christmas romance. Lifelong friends Lily Cavanaugh and Cameron Greene know each other inside and out. Their matchmaking mothers seem determined to pair them up on blind dates. As the Christmas season is approaching, they come up with the perfect solution: pretend to date each other and break up after the holiday. It will get their meddling mothers off their backs at least for a while and have a chance for a peaceful Christmas without the constant questions. Simple, right? What could go wrong? As they pretend to date and suddenly the feelings are becoming very, very real. Will they continue to pretend? Or will they face the possibility that they have fallen in love?

Mistletoe Between Friends is a sweet friends to lovers, fake dating Christmas romance. A quick paced, page turner, it was easy to fall in love with Lily and Cameron, to root for them and cheer as they reveal their true feelings. I loved their friendship banter and their uneasiness as they experienced more romantic feelings for each other. I cheered when Cameron defended Lily against her sister’s backhanded comments. I especially loved the epilogue. I won’t say why because it would spoil the ending but it was so good! Mistletoe Between Friends is a great read for an afternoon of romance and the magic of Christmas. If you love a friends to lovers, fake dating romance with the magic of Christmas, I highly recommend Mistletoe Between Friends.

Daydream: a slow burn friends to lovers romance

Daydream by Hannah Grace is the third book in the Maple Hills series. Henry Turner has been the little brother of the Maple Hills University group of friends. When his procrastination lands him in a difficult class with an equally difficult professor, Henry knows he has to put in extra work to just survive his junior year. Also as the new captain of the hockey team, a position he didn’t want, Henry knows he cannot fail. He meets Halle Jacobs when he crashes her book club at a local bookstore. A fellow junior with her own issues and struggles knows she can help Henry pass his class. When Henry learns that she is trying to write a book for a competition, he offers to help her in return. To help give her new experiences to inspire her and beat her writer’s block. As they set a few rules and promise to stick to their rules. But rules are meant to be broken, right?

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Maple Hills series. And I eagerly looked forward to Daydream. This story was different from the first two books, in a good way. Daydream is a slow burn, friends to lovers romance story. Henry and Halle are sweet with each other and watching them grow together was amazing. I loved Henry as he helped Halle break from her shell and insecurities to stand up for herself and establish a few boundaries. I loved Halle as she encouraged Henry on his own personal challenges. This book is not as spicy as the first two books which was refreshing as I enjoyed their emotional journey together and not just their sexual one. There were many touching moments between Henry, Halle and their cast of friends and supporters. There were moments of laughter and it felt as if I was in the room with this group of friends. I look forward to future books in this series. I highly recommend Daydream.

Changing Roles: a romantic comedy a la Notting Hill

Changing Roles by Melanie Moreland is a friends to lovers romance with a Hollywood twist. Liam Wright is Hollywood’s golden boy and at the top of the A-list but something is missing. He doesn’t know much about life. He thanks his lucky stars for Shelby Carter. Part confidant, part master chef, she is his best friend and the only person who truly gets to see the real Liam. Reeling from her own painful past, Shelby enjoys Liam and his puzzling antics. A very handsome man, Liam is pampered and his antics keep Shelby on her toes. One day, Liam begins to see her as more than an employee and a friend. And he wants her to see him as more than the Hollywood golden boy. Can he truly be the man she needs? Is he up for the greatest role of his life? 

Changing Roles is a celebrity/non-celebrity romance a la Music & Lyrics (2005) and Notting Hill (1999). I know that Notting Hill is considered a romantic comedy classic; but I am not a fan of either movie. If I had known that this book could be compared with these movies, I would have passed on it. I was bored. I did not care for Liam. He is a 28 year old manchild who has no clue about the real world and Shelby, a 33 year old, older woman who was going to teach him. Their relationship is weird from the get-go as he is the employer and she is the employee and yet she wears his shirts and can’t sleep when he is not home? It was weird. If you are a fan of Music & Lyrics and Notting Hill, you may enjoy Changing Roles.

Summer with the Marine: a short but sweet second chance romance

Summer with the Marine by Ellie Hall is the first book in the Blue Bay Beach series. Eisley Higgins needs a fresh start. She moves to her mom’s cottage in the retirement community in the coastal town of Blue Bay Beach. With a new job for a local restaurant, she is tricked into asking out the first male customer. With a twist of fate, she comes face to face with the one who broke her heart. Ford Armstrong spent the last ten years serving his country with the Marines. Now, he finds himself a civilian and a single dad to a two year old daughter. The last thing he expected to see is the one who got away. Despite the decade apart, they realize their secret feelings were still there. Will they reveal their true feelings and create a future together? 

A clean, sweet and wholesome romance, Summer with the Marine is a fast paced, short but sweet story. I was able to read it in an afternoon. A friends to lovers romance, Eisley and Ford were childhood friends who secretly fell in love with each other. As life took them on different paths, fate or kismet, brings them to the same small town as they both at a crossroads in their lives. I enjoyed their romance as they reconnect and confess their feelings. I would have liked to see more of Eisley’s new friends from the restaurant, I suppose we will in the rest of the series. Overall, I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more stories in this series. If you enjoy small town, second chance romance, I recommend Summer with the Marine.

When We Began: a teen romance novella

When We Began by Judy Corry is a prequel novella to the Ridgewater High series. Cassie never paid much attention to her best friend. Alyssa’s older brother, Liam, until he refused to kiss her during the party game of Seven Minutes of Heaven back in junior high. Now in high school, she has to spend the week with Alyssa and her family while her parents are out of town. She is determined to find her next summer fling and flaunt it in Liam’s face. It was working great until Liam began to target his charms to her. As they begin to hang out and talk, they discover they were wrong about each other and many other things. Falling in love certainly wasn’t in the plans. 

When We Began is a short but sweet teen romance with plenty of banter and emotional revelations. Even though it is a novella, it was engaging and felt like a full length novel. It is a clean romance with plenty of heart and fun. I loved Cassie and Liam as individuals and as a couple. Their banter was fun and sweet. It was a wonderful mix of friends/enemies to lovers romance. I am looking forward to the rest of the series. I hope to see Cassie and Liam together in the series. While it is a teen romance, readers who love romance will enjoy this story. It is a great story to fill an afternoon. I recommend When We Began.

Cruising on Ice: a friends to lovers, hockey romance

Cruising on Ice by Kerry Evelyn is the first book of the Palmer City Voltage series. Taylor Ranford did not expect to be on a cruise with her longtime crush. When her sister suddenly becomes ill, Kingston Brewster agrees to go with her. As the season was over, Kingston had a bunch of free time on his hands, so why wouldn't he spend the time with her. After all, she has always been there for him and even helped him through his playing slump. Neither realize that the other holds feelings beyond friendship. Their five day cruise brings them closer and they have an amazing time together. When the career making call that he has been waiting for comes, Kingston realizes that it’s now or never. He needs to tell Taylor about his feelings but still he hesitates. Could revealing his feelings break both their hearts? 

I am fairly new to the hockey romance genre and I looked forward to this friends to lovers, hockey romance. I enjoyed Taylor as she was bubbly and positive and Kingston, as the fun, handsome hockey player. While I was a bit disappointed that there is little hockey in the story itself, the cruise was a different setting. They meet fun and colorful characters on the cruise and I enjoyed the slow transition from friends to lovers. They had tons of chemistry and I could easily see them as a couple. There were great fun moments and sweet romantic moments. It is a predictable romance but sweet and the story flowed well. I didn’t like the miscommunication break up near the end but the makeup was sweet. Overall, I enjoyed this story. If you enjoy friends to lovers, hockey romance, I recommend Cruising on Ice.

The Fast Lane: a friends to lovers with humor and heart

The Fast Lane by Sharon M Peterson is the second book in the Two Harts series. Alicia Ramos needs a ride to her oldest brother’s wedding in Portland after her mother went overboard and there is no room for her in her parents’ car. Family friend, Theo Goodnight, is the man to give her a ride. However, a big problem! Ever since she proclaimed her love for Theo many, many years ago, their relationship has been lukewarm. After a recent break up, she was taking a dating sabbatical. He’s the last person she wanted to be alone with on a six day road trip, especially when he only sees her as a sister. However, as the trip begins, they fight over the playlist, banter and flirt. The close proximity and two thousand miles has her heart race. With each mile, she can’t help but wonder if Theo feels the same?

Sharon M Peterson has become my new auto-buy author. The Fast Lane is another hilarious friends-to-lovers, second-chance, brother’s best friend romantic comedy. I laughed. I sighed. I cried and I grinned ear to ear as I read well into the night. I could not put this book down. I loved Alicia and her antics. I loved the sibling banter between Alicia and her brothers. I also loved Alicia’s “note to self” notes at the beginning of each chapter. It added to the humor in the story. There was a bit of family drama as well. What is a wedding without family drama? I also loved Theo and his love for Alicia. He just gets her. You do not really need to read the first book, The Fake Out, to enjoy this story. However, I highly recommend reading it as it is another enjoyable story.  I highly, highly recommend The Fast Lane.

His Curvy Friend: a friends to lovers romance

His Curvy Friend by Mary E Thompson is the first book in the Book Boyfriends Wanted series. Ian has been stuck in the friend zone for years. But he wanted for the right moment to make his move and he knows it’s coming. Blake is stinging from a recent breakup. Her ex-boyfriend broke up with her because he thought she was in love with her best friend’s older brother. A claim she thought was ridiculous, even though she thought often about the time she walked in on him just out of the shower. Water running down his chest. His hair slicked back from his face and that stormy look in his eyes. But no, she didn’t have a thing for him! When an online dating site pairs Ian and Blake together, it becomes his opportunity to show a side of him she has never seen before, the side that wanted forever with her. Can he convince her that he sees her for her? 

I love books that feature people of all body shapes and abilities and I looked forward to His Curvy Friend. Unfortunately, it was a let down from the opening chapter. First, Blake makes the statement along the lines that all curvy girls get sweaty easily. As a curvy girl myself, I scoffed and a big NO escaped my lips. Second, there was a huge information dump in the first chapter and it was confusing on who was who and what was going on. Third, I simply didn’t buy Ian and Blake’s friendship, much less their romance. They were both supposed to be in their 30s and yet, I thought they were easily in their teens and immature. Blake was in a constant “woe is me” pity party. While I understand intrusive thoughts, it was so repetitive I wanted to scream at her to do something about it!  Overall, I did not enjoy His Curvy Friend and I will not be continuing the series.

One Last Shot: a marriage pact and a second chance at romance

One Last Shot by Betty Cayouette is a friends to lovers, marriage pact romance. From the moment Emerson and Theo met freshman year of high school, they were inseparable best friends. As they expressed their true feelings for each other, their lives went on different paths, not before promising each other that if they were not married by twenty-eight, they would marry each other. Emerson is an in-demand supermodel nearing her twenty-eighth birthday. When a calendar reminder pops up on her phone of her marriage pact with Theo. She realizes that this is her shot to rekindle the only love she really wanted. She learns where Theo, now a photographer, is shooting next and orchestrates her way to be a part of it. A four-day shoot in the romantic setting of Cinque Terre, Italy, Emerson and Theo find their feelings being tested as roadblocks after obstacles get in their way. Is this their last shot at love or their final goodbye? 

One Last Shot is the debut romance from Betty Cayouette and I love a good second chance, friends to lovers romance. I hemmed and hawed about reading this story as I do not care for fashion or supermodel world. But I decided to give it a chance anyway. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get into it. The main issue with this story was the miscommunication. The miscommunication trope is one of my least favorite romantic trope. Their roadblocks and obstacles could have been avoided if they just talked about it! They dance around their marriage pact, something they are both aware of as they reunite, and yet pretend they had forgotten about it. The constant flashbacks to their high school years took me out of the present events and bogged the story down. Overall, the story was okay. I think I am not the right audience for this book. If you think you may enjoy this story, I recommend giving One Last Shot a try.

The Cupcake Cottage: a sweet and fun friends to lovers romance

The Cupcake Cottage by Jean Oram is the first book in the Hockey Sweethearts series. Maverick Blades could have any woman he wants. Handsome, talented and labeled a bad boy. However, the one woman he wants is off limits because, you know, the bro code. Daisy-Mae Ray is the ex-girlfriend of his best friend and most likely would want to stay away from a guy like him. Little does he know that she has harbored a long time crush for him. Daisy-Mae knows Maverick doesn’t deserve the reputation but how to help everyone see him as the man she knows he is? After joking about faking dating her to help his image, Daisy Mae finds herself in the middle of a publicity stunt. Can this fake relationship turn into something real or will her heart be broken? 

The Cupcake Cottage is a sweet, fun romance. I loved Daisy-Mae and Maverick from the beginning. Two people who are attracted to each other but stay apart because of some rules or boundaries that just don’t exist. I loved that they were longtime friends and felt comfortable with each other. The banter between them was highly enjoyable. As their romance became real, it was really heartwarming and sweet. I smiled as they began to open up to their true feelings. I’m not a hockey fan but the story gives enough hints to get the feel for the game for fans and non-fans alike. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Daisy-Mae and Maverick’s romance. It flowed at a great pace and it was fast paced. If you enjoy fun, sweet sport romances, I highly recommend The Cupcake Cottage.

Let It Be Me: a friends to lovers, age gap romance

Let it Be Me by Kait Nolan is the first book in the Men of Misfit Inn series. Four years ago, Caleb Romero and Emerson Aldridge were thrown together after a tragedy. When her best friend died in a car accident, Emerson gained custody of her teenage daughter and focused her life on Fiona’s care. Caleb believes he met the woman of his dreams, however, the timing was bad, so he was content being Emerson’s friend in her time of need. Now Fiona is headed off to college and Emerson finds herself at a crossroad. After one toe curling kiss, Emerson and Caleb find themselves heading into a new phase of their relationship. The only thing stopping Emerson is their age difference, can Caleb convince her that it means nothing?

The book opens with an emotional car accident which leaves Fiona orphaned and Emerson suddenly a single mother with Caleb, their rescuer and new friend. After the first chapter, the story fast forwards 4 years later as Fiona is getting ready for college. That’s where the story fell flat. There is a slow burn romance and then there’s a slow romance. I was so bored reading this story that I found myself blanking. And this is the second time I tried to read this story. The first time, I thought it was me and decided to give it another try at a later date. The second time, I realized my first impressions were correct. Overall, I did not enjoy Let It Be Me.
