The Unforgivable Sin: what is it and who is in danger of committing it?

In the gospels, Jesus makes a statement that many believers talk about but few truly understand. In Matthew 12:31-32, Jesus says, “And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come” The statement also appears in Mark 3:28-29 and Luke 12:10. The blasphemy against the Holy Spirit aka The Unforgivable Sin can be worrisome to those who fear they have committed this act. What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? Why is this sin so egregious to be unforgivable? Should believers worry about it?

To understand why Jesus made this statement in Matthew 12:32, we need to back up to Matthew 12:22 as the religious leaders accused Jesus of being under Satan’s power. Jesus heals a demon possessed man who was blind and mute (verse 22) as the people were wondered if Jesus was the Son of David (verse 23), the Pharisees said that “only Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons” (verse 24). Beelzebub (or Beelzebul) is a Philistine deity known as the Lord of the flies or the Lord of filth, a term often used to refer to Satan (Winger, 2019). By attributing Jesus’s work to Satan, they were actively campaigning against Jesus to slander him and ruin his reputation (Winger, 2019). Jesus confronts the Pharisees and states that Satan cannot be divided against himself as a kingdom, a city, a household cannot be divided against itself (verses 25-26). Jesus is trying to warn the Pharisees that they were on shaky ground, on the brink of eternal ruin.

The blasphemy against the Holy Spirit means to attribute the work of the Holy Spirit to Satan. It is a deliberate and ongoing rejection of the Holy Spirit’s work and even of God Himself. It is a conscious, persistent, deliberate and malicious rejection of the Holy Spirit’s testament to the deity and saving power of Jesus Christ. A person who has committed this sin has shut himself off from God so thoroughly that he is unaware of the sin at all. The Pharisees were deliberating refusing to acknowledge God’s power in Christ. The Holy Spirit testifies to God’s power in two ways: first, external through miracles and second, internal through the conviction of sin (Mike Winger, 2019). I understand skepticism and a desire to be absolutely sure before making a bold statement either way, even John the Baptist had a season of doubt (Matthew 11:2-6 and Luke 7:18-35). However, a deliberate refusal shows a deliberate and irreversible hardness of heart and therefore the inability to seek repentance. It is a profound hardness of one’s heart. An attack against Jesus, the Holy Spirit can overcome. However, to see what God is clearly doing and attack His Spirit is an insult, a dishonor and makes an enemy with His Spirit. Who can help bring someone back from that?

A person who fears having committed this sin shows by his concerns that he hasn’t committed it at all. A true believer in Jesus Christ cannot commit this sin. Why? Because it is a refusal to accept the witness of the Holy Spirit to who Jesus is and what He came to do and fully submit their lives to Him. Repentance requires a simple, invaluable and a softhearted condition. Christians are warned to not be like Esau who “found no place of repentance” (Hebrews 12:17). His heart was so callous and hard that he was not able to genuinely repent. To harden one’s heart doesn’t really allow for that type of submission. Whoever does rejects the prompting of the Holy Spirit and has fully turned their back to God and all faith do need to worry. They have removed themselves from the force that could lead them to repentance and restoration to God. As Jesus says in Mark 3:29, it is an eternal sin. Hebrews 3:7-8 warns that someone hears the voice of God, “do not harden your heart.”

In conclusion, the unforgivable sin is not unforgivable because forgiveness isn’t granted, it is not sought in the first place. Someone who blasphemies against the Holy Spirit, denying the work of God, usually isn’t going to see the errors of his ways and seek forgiveness. It is a hardening of the heart to the point of no return. A true follower of Christ, who has believed the witness of the Holy Spirit, cannot blasphemy against the Holy Spirit as he or she does not deny or would not His work. It is okay to have doubt. It is normal, common and a part of growing in your faith. However, do not let your doubt harden your heart and let your eyes become clouded to the testimony of the Holy Spirit.

The First Love: can a second chance at love overcome the secrets of the past?

The First Love is the first book in the Lake Bittersweet series by Jennifer Bernard. Carly Gault returns to Lake Bittersweet after seventeen years. She is shocked by the sudden death of her father, Steven Gault, when she receives another shock when she discovers she has been named as the executor of his estate. Besides dealing with the mountain of bills and debts he left behind, she must deal with the pain of the past and the boy who broke her heart. To Thomas Cooper, Carly is the girl who got away, the one he gave away. Seeing her again takes him back to their summer together, their love and the choice he made when he broke her heart. Now that she’s back and more beautiful than ever, there is no denying their attraction is still there. But when secrets of the past come to light, can they have a second chance at love?

I loved Jennifer Barnard’s Lost Harbor, Alaska series and I looked forward to starting the Lake Bittersweet series. First loves are often powerful and first heartbreaks are just as powerful. I love second chance romances. Unfortunately, The First Love did not have the same feel that the books from the Lost Harbor series. I did not care for Carly or Thomas, although I did like Thomas a little bit more. When Carly returns home, she learns that her father’s bar has been shut down by order of the fire marshal. She goes to confront the first marshal, only to learn that it is Thomas. Their conservation about the violations was eye rolling. He is in the right to shut it down and her only defense is that other buildings probably have the same violations. Like what? Overall, I did not enjoy The First Love and I am unsure if I will continue the series.

Building Fences: a second chance romance

Building Fences is the first book in the Cedar Creek Families series by Violet Howe. Caroline Miller’s life has been thrown into turmoil as she is on the verge of divorce, an upcoming move with her two children and someone connected to her birth mother reaches out. Caroline has been searching for her birth mother for years and now she finds herself driving to Cedar Creek, only to have her car stolen in a plank gone horribly wrong. Love is the last thing on her mind and she definitely wants nothing to do with Levi, the handsome prankster, who tries to make amends. As she prepares to reunite with her birth mother and learn more about her origins, Caroline begins to examine her current life and her wide open future. Will she take a chance on love again?

Building Fences is my first full length novel by Violet Howe. I love stories of second chances, rebuilding lives after life changing events, so I was looking forward to reading this story and being introduced to a new author. After the first chapter, I was confused about who was who and had to reread a few sections for clarity. There were a few awkward sentences and I thought maybe I was reading too fast to understand but slowing down and rereading didn’t help much. It didn’t do better from there. As I read, I found the storyline farfetched, the characters were unlikeable and the length of the novel was too long. Overall, I did not enjoy Building Fences and I will not continue with this series. If you are a fan of Violet Howe’s books, you may enjoy Building Fences

White Mulberry: one woman's determination to survive despite the racial tensions

White Mulberry by Rosa Kwon Easton is a moving story of a woman who lives between two worlds in order to survive. In 1928, Japanese-occupied Korea, eleven year old Miyoung has big dreams. When she is presented with the chance to pursue those dreams; however, she must leave her mother behind and live with her older sister and her husband in Japan. Knowing that Koreans are treated well in Japan, she must leave her name and culture behind. Once in Japan, she takes a new name and finds a new calling in nursing and finding solace in a local Korean church. What she never expects is to fall in love and find new purpose in her husband and their son. As war looms, she feels the racial tensions more than ever. Miyoung is faced with a choice: does she stay in Japan or does she find her chance to leave and provide a future for her and her family?

White Mulberry was an Amazon First Reads choice for November. I loved the beautiful cover and was intrigued by the story as I have done a lot of research about Korea. I haven’t seen many historical books written from a Korean perspective. From the opening chapter to the closing author’s notes, I was deeply moved by Miyoung’s story. White Mulberry was inspired by the author’s Korean grandmother’s story which I love. I loved Miyoung as she struggles to hold on to her Korean identity and yet discovers a way to survive within the strict racial rules that the Japanese culture had put into place. I loved her resilience and determination to prove those against her wrong. It is a beautiful story about one woman, being caught between two worlds, who suffered the trauma of occupation, racism and displacement and yet still had the sheer determination to survive and reclaim her name and culture. I highly, highly recommend White Mulberry

White Mulberry will be available in paperback, eBook and audiobook

8 weeks: is eight weeks enough time to win back love and trust?

8 Weeks is the first book in the Time for Love series by Bethany Lopez. Shelly has been in love with Cal since high school. They married right after graduation and built a life together, despite everyone claiming the odds were against them. Six years later, they are stronger than ever, at least Shelly thinks they are. Cal returns home from a guys weekend with a horrible confession. She now faces the ultimate betrayal and her first instinct is to call it quits. Cal comes up with a way to prove to Shelly that his love is still true. All he asks is for eight weeks, Eight weeks to convince her that their marriage, their life together is worth saving. Will Shelly trust him again? Is eight weeks enough time for Cal to win back Shelly’s love and trust?

This story was so hard to read and no, it wasn’t because of a single night of infidelity and the possibility of divorce. While infidelity is something hard to forgive and why would anyone listen to the excuses? It was everyone involved. From Shelly and Cal to their friends. Cal’s buddies tell him to not tell Shelly. So their solution is simply to not tell her. Cal knows that won’t fly but Shelly knows him too well. And he was right. Shelly says she knows that Cal wouldn’t willingly cheat on her; but she refuses to talk to him about what happened. Even as Cal explains what he can remember, it seemed obvious that it wasn’t a willing situation. Overall, I did not enjoy this story and I will not continue the series. I do not recommend 8 Weeks

The Talking Tree: when her mother's death sends her searching in the past for answers

The Talking Tree is the first book in The Hartwell Women by Judith Keim. Returning to her hometown after the death of her estranged mother, Marissa Cole just wants to dot the i’s and cross the t’s and leave it all behind once again. However, her mother has one final request: take her ashes to New Hope, Maine and scatter them from the local cliffs. Marissa never heard her mother mention New Hope and she didn’t understand why her mom would make such a request. Once in Maine, she discovers a family her mother left behind. However, the family isn’t what she thought where the smiles and the welcomes aren’t as sincere as she hopes. With the family fortune on the line, can Marissa make the right decision for herself, her family and her future?

This story had an interesting start. A woman discovers her mother was hiding secrets and she must unravel the mystery after her death. However, once Marissa is in New Hope and she learns about her mother’s family, the story gets bogged down. The drama surrounding the family business and who should be running it or not. I definitely didn’t care for Brad, Marissa’s boyfriend and “love of her life.” I didn’t care how he acted like a spoiled brat when Marissa was trying to find her place in her mother’s family. By the end of the book, I was glad it was over. Overall, the story was good; however, I was not interested enough to continue the series. If you enjoy stories of discovering family, coming to terms with the past and finding a new future, I recommend The Talking Tree

Life is a Cabernet: a novella set in the romantic wine country of Napa Valley

Life is a Cabernet by Jan Moran is a companion novella to The Winemakers, a part of the Heartwarming Family Saga series. It is 1956 Napa Valley, Juliana Cardona is passionate about winemaking and wants to build her career as a wine publicist. She is also struggling with the death of her fiance killed in an army ambush during the Korean War. Juliana isn’t sure she has the strength or courage to risk love again. Until she holds a press event in San Francisco and meets the elusive Henri Laurent, a local winemaker. Their budding friendship turns romantic, Juliana learns Henri is hiding a secret that could devastate any future they may have together. Can she find the strength to face the troubled past of Henri and risk her heart once again?

I’m not much of a wine drinker and I do not know the ins and outs of winemaking; however, the discussions about the wine and its process only added to the richness of this romance. Juliana is trying to avoid love and Henri is avoiding people all together. The two together have a chemistry that is as rich as the wine they are so passionate about. Together they find healing they didn’t think was possible. Life is a Cabernet is a fun read for an afternoon. I am looking forward to reading the companion novel, The Winemakers, which features Juliana’s friend Caterina Rosetta. Will Juliana and Henri make an appearance? If you enjoy second chance romance with the romantic backdrop of Napa Valley wine country, I recommend Life is a Cabernet

The Love List: a woman takes charge of her life by doing what she loves. Is falling love be a part of the plan?

The Love List is the first book in the Hilton Head Island series by Elana Johnson. Beatrice “Bea” Callahan loves lists. She loves when she creates to-do lists and the satisfaction she gets when she can check each item off. So when she gets the finalized divorce papers, she is ready with a list to live the life she wants. Bea doesn’t call it a bucket list, it’s a love list. She loves the outdoors, so she plans to visit ten National Parks. She loves animals, so she will get a puppy. She loves the beach and wants to take a dream vacation. After the insistence of her beloved friends, she heads to Hilton Head Island. There she meets Grant Turner, the man who owns her rented house. He soon becomes her tour guide, a friend and then something more. Can she add falling in love to her list?

This story opened with Bea eagerly waiting for her divorce papers and when she does, she wastes no time and consults no one as she starts down her list. It is supposed to be Bea and Grant’s romance story; however, I did not like chapters featuring her friends more and discussing their troubles. I understand that the author is trying to establish interest in the future books in the series but it was a turn off for me. I also disliked that all the couples are divorced, troubled marriages or newly separated. While all marriages have issues; but can one marriage be relatively a happy one? Overall, I did not enjoy The Love List and will not be continuing the series. However, if you are a fan of Elana Johnson, you may enjoy The Love List and I encourage you to give it a try.

Cabinet of Curiosities: a collection of the unique, strange and unbelievable from history

Cabinet of Curiosities: A Historical Tour of the Unbelievable, the Unsettling and the Bizarre by Aaron Mahnke with Harry Marks is a book based on Aaron Mahnke’s popular podcast. Filled with fascinating stories of the wonderful, amazing and bizarre people, places and objects as part of our history. From the true origins of common foods, such as the croissant, to the strange coincidences in events, the rescue of Abraham Lincoln’s son by an unlikely individual and little known historical events and places. Gathering these stories in a topical collection for the millions of fans of the podcast and fans of the strange and unusual.

I enjoy hearing unusual historical events and unexplainable events. I hadn't heard of Aaron Mahnke’s podcast before finding this book. The stories he features are quick and bite sized. Some of the stories I had heard before and others I had not. My only issue is the author heavily sources Wikipedia which every professor I’ve ever had always told me to never use Wikipedia. It is a good starting point but citing it as a source is problematic. Overall, the stories are interesting and fascinating. I see fans of the podcast enjoying this book. I also see fans of Ripley’s Believe or Not and the Travel Channel’s Mysteries at the Museum would enjoy this book. If you are fascinated by the strange and unusual of history, I recommend Cabinet of Curiosities

The Sunflower House: a historical novel about family secrets and the Lebensborn Program

The Sunflower House by Adrianna Allegri is a story of little talked about history and family secrets at its center. In a sleepy German village in 1938, Allina Strauss had an idyllic life. She works at her uncle’s bookshop, she makes strudel with her aunt and she spends her free time with her friends and fiancé. But with Adolf Hitler as Chancellor, her family is hiding a dangerous secret. Allina learns that her mother was Jewish, making Allina a Mischling. Everything and everyone she knows and loves will be gone in quick succession and she will find herself at the Hochland House, a state run baby factory as part of the Lebensborn Program with the purpose of creating the Aryan population. Allina knows she must keep her Jewish heritage; however, when she discovers a group of neglected, less than desirable children, she is determined to save them from the horrors of the eugenics program.

The Sunflower House is one woman’s story of determination to survive and resist against the powers of evil. I love World War II stories which bring to light the stories that are often forgotten or passed over. I had never heard of the Lebensborn program which the book’s blurb described as a “real life Handmaid’s Tale.” Where the Lebensborn program differs from the Handmaid’s Tale is that many of the women in the program willingly and proudly produced these babies for their country. This story had me hooked and I could not put it down as Allina risks her life for the innocent children in her care. There is a love story as Allina joins forces with Karl, a high ranking SS officer who is using his rank to subvert the evil plans. I highly recommend The Sunflower House. It is a story of love, loss, friends and the secrets we think are dead and buried.

The Sunflower House will be available on November 12, 2024

When We Were Widows: a story of mothers and daughters and the journey of grief

When We Were Widows by Annette Chavez Macias is a story of grief, secrets and the power in moving forward. When her husband passed away six months ago, Yesica Diaz-Taylor thought she was handling her grief well; however an incident at work forces her to think twice. Her boss forces her to take a leave of absence and attend a support group, Yesica decides to just go through the motions, anything to get back to work. What she wasn’t expecting was that her widowed mother, Ana, and her grandmother, Mama Melda, needed to stay with her as their house was being repaired. The arrangement will test their already strained relationship. With unresolved tensions following them, Yesica, Ana and Imelda learn to share a home, their heartbreak and finally reveal the family secrets in order to overcome their grief, anger and find a new strength.

When We Were Widows is a heartfelt story about grief; however, it is also about mothers and daughters and the secrets they keep from each other. At the beginning of the story, Yesica was not my favorite character. I found her to be too harsh and cruel. However, I grew to love her as she began to reveal her secrets and talk about the hurts she has been hiding. Yesica also learns that she and her mother have a lot more in common than she thought. I also enjoyed Ana’s transformation to finding her life in pursuing a dream long put aside. I loved Mama Melda as the wise grandmother who bridges mother and daughter together with tough love and a few laughs. The three women are surrounded by wonderful characters who help them on their new paths. I highly recommend When We Were Widows

The Stroke of Winter: a modern gothic story with supernatural elements

The Stroke of Winter by Wendy Webb is a spooky story set in the tourist town of Wharton where the supernatural is more common place than not. Amethyst “Tess” Bell is renovating her family’s ancestral home into a bed and breakfast. As she begins to open rooms that were locked and forbidden to be reopened, she discovers a deep family secret and mystery. Inside the once shuttered art studio of her grandfather, Sebastian Bell, she discovers paintings that don’t resemble her grandfather’s previous works. They seem to be the work of a twisted mind which raises questions for Tess, sparking disturbing dreams and a determination to discover the truth. What evil was locked behind those doors? Will she discover the truth in the darkness of the icy dead of winter?

Wendy Webb has become my go-to for gothic stories. She has the ability to use atmosphere with great effectiveness and tells a story that will hook readers until the very end. With most stories with supernatural elements and legends, there are aspects of the story that aren’t fully explained. The ending was abrupt and left me stretching my head in confusion. However, the ending was the type that kept you thinking and the more I thought about it, the more the unexplained elements added to the unworldliness of the house, the town and the overall story. While The Stroke of Winter is not my favorite by Wendy Webb, overall, I did enjoy it and look forward to reading more books by her. If you enjoy modern gothic stories, I recommend The Stroke of Winter

The Hope in Hot Chocolate: an enemies to lovers romance a la You've Got Mail

The Hope in Hot Chocolate is the seventh book in the Poppy Creek series by Rachael Bloome. Sadie Hamilton is the kindhearted candymaker in the small town of Poppy Creek. Kindhearted to everyone except Landon Morris, Mr Anti-Sugar, especially as her candy shop is struggling and he will be her direct competition. Landon can’t afford any distractions between caring for his ailing mother and trying to launch his new venture. However, he can’t get Sadie out of his head and everywhere he turns, they seem to be thrown together. First, they are forced to share a booth at the town’s Sips and Sweets Festival and second, they are constantly matched as the town’s Valentine’s festivities are in full swing. There’s no denying their connection but can they put aside their contention to take a chance on love?

I love the Poppy Creek series and The Hope in Hot Chocolate is another great addition. Sadie is a woman driven by passion for the confections she lovingly makes and the legacy she has been handed when she took over the shop. Landon is also driven by passion and a commitment to bring treats without the sugar to Poppy Creek. It is an enemies to lovers romance a la You’ve Got Mail with the small town charms of Poppy Creek. A clean romance with plenty of drama and laughs, The Hope in Hot Chocolate will bring a smile to your face and a sigh to your lips. I look forward to finishing this series and revisiting the romances of Poppy Creek. I highly, highly recommend The Hope in Hot Chocolate as well as the rest of the Poppy Creek series.

Adding to her struggles is her path seems to constantly cross with her high school sweetheart, Nate Sanders, the man who broke her heart. It is a story of growth, second chances and love. I loved Lanie from the moment she appeared on the page and my heart broke for her. When Cardinals Appear is an engaging story as Lanie confronts her past and those around her. She has past hurts, not just from Nate, but her father, brother and her late mother as well. Lanie must learn to stand up and figure out what she wants in life and how to be happy. I also loved that the cardinal is an important part of Lanie’s story and I loved Lanie’s interaction with it. There were tears shed as Lanie comes to grips with her new normal and her life altering decisions. I highly, highly recommend When Cardinals Appear

When The Day Comes: she lives two lives but must choose one. Which one will she choose?

When The Day Comes is the first book in the Timeless series by Gabrielle Meyer. Libby has a powerful gift. As she falls asleep in one life, she wakes up in the other. She is the same person but leading very different lives. Libby lives one life in Colonial Williamsburg in 1774 amidst the early days of the American Revolution. She, along with her mother, is a public printer for the House of Burgesses and the Royal Governor. She works to provide for her family and support the Patriot cause. Henry Montgomery is the man she loves, a man with secrets of his own. She lives another life in the Gilded Age of 1914. A life filled with wealth, privilege and social standing. However, she is not destined to live the two lives forever. On her twenty-first birthday, she must choose one path. What was once a clear choice, as she nears her birthday, the choice becomes harder and harder to make.

I was intrigued by this premise. A faith based time crossing historical novel? Who would have thought of that combo? When The Day Comes is inventive and inspirational about our life’s decisions and the impact they have on the present and the future. The addition of faith and seeking God’s guidance in one’s decision was great to see. I could not put this book down and read well into the night to finish. I had to know what happened! There is so much that happens in this story that I cannot talk about due to spoilers! However, readers will not be disappointed. It is engaging with wonderful characters. I loved Libby and her fire and courage as she stands for what she believes in. I loved seeing various historical figures and hints at historical events we know that come. After I finished, I immediately added the other books to my wish list. I highly, highly recommend When the Day Comes
