The Cowboy's Stolen Heart: a small town cowboy romance

The Cowboy’s Stolen Heart is the first book of The Cowboys of Sweetheart Creek series by Jean Oram. Fashion model Laura Oakes inherits her great aunt’s estate. As she is ready to put her life on hold and heads to Sweetheart Creek, Texas and begins small town life. She runs into Levi Wylder, the handsome and yet serious cowboy, who she has been crushing on for years. Unfortunately, he sees her nothing more than a princess pretending to be a cowgirl. Because what cowgirl buys boots based on looks instead of function? Busy running the ranch, Levi doesn’t need a pretend cowgirl but when he needs a temporary riding stable manager, Laura proves she is capable and Levi realizes he underestimated her. They spend time together and fall in love; however, their romance finds obstacles. Some of his family has doubts about the relationship. Will she return to her modeling career? Will she stay?

The Cowboy’s Stolen Heart is a cute, sweet romance with lots of fun and plenty of drama. I loved the small town feel with all the different personalities from the welcoming diner waitress to the ornery old man. I loved the chemistry between Laura and Levi. Levi has had his heart broken before and he is wary of opening his heart again. Adding to his plate is running the ranch, he is also dealing with plenty of family drama among his brothers, he doesn’t need any heartbreak. Laura is recovering from her own failed relationship and is at a crossroad in her career and isn’t looking for a romance either. However, the sparks fly as the two spend time together. There are plenty of sweet moments and tense discussion. Overall, I enjoyed this story. I look forward to the rest of the series. If you enjoy cowboy romances, I recommend The Cowboy’s Stolen Heart.

The Cupcake Cottage: a sweet and fun friends to lovers romance

The Cupcake Cottage by Jean Oram is the first book in the Hockey Sweethearts series. Maverick Blades could have any woman he wants. Handsome, talented and labeled a bad boy. However, the one woman he wants is off limits because, you know, the bro code. Daisy-Mae Ray is the ex-girlfriend of his best friend and most likely would want to stay away from a guy like him. Little does he know that she has harbored a long time crush for him. Daisy-Mae knows Maverick doesn’t deserve the reputation but how to help everyone see him as the man she knows he is? After joking about faking dating her to help his image, Daisy Mae finds herself in the middle of a publicity stunt. Can this fake relationship turn into something real or will her heart be broken?

The Cupcake Cottage is a sweet, fun romance. I loved Daisy-Mae and Maverick from the beginning. Two people who are attracted to each other but stay apart because of some rules or boundaries that just don’t exist. I loved that they were longtime friends and felt comfortable with each other. The banter between them was highly enjoyable. As their romance became real, it was really heartwarming and sweet. I smiled as they began to open up to their true feelings. I’m not a hockey fan but the story gives enough hints to get the feel for the game for fans and non-fans alike. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Daisy-Mae and Maverick’s romance. It flowed at a great pace and it was fast paced. If you enjoy fun, sweet sport romances, I highly recommend The Cupcake Cottage.

The Gingerbread Cafe: life, love and hockey

The Gingerbread Cafe is the fifth book in the Hockey Sweethearts series by Jean Oram. Miranda Fairchild has bucked the system. Her family thinks she’s crazy. She bought a failing hockey team in Texas, with it a small bit of fame and she moved to a small town out in the country. But worst of all, she is still single! Miranda has high standards that she feels no man could ever understand her. One day, she walks into The Gingerbread Cafe , hiding her true identity, pretending to be an average woman. Dak, the down-to-earth owner of The Gingerbread Cafe, seems to understand her. He is not only handsome but he knows how to laugh and make her laugh. What Miranda doesn’t know is Dak knows exactly who she is because he is a former NHL player and is trying to work with her team’s charity. As their attraction grows, Dak fears what will happen when she discovers who he really is. Will she be able to put aside her preconceived notions for a chance of a great love?

While The Gingerbread Cafe is the fifth book to be released in the Hockey Sweethearts series, it is a prequel with events occurring before the events of The Cupcake Cottage, the first book in the series. The Hockey Sweethearts is also a spin off of Ms. Oram’s Sweetheart Creek series. The Gingerbread Cafe is a sweet, clean romance. Miranda is a woman in a man’s world and gets bad press for it. What could a woman possibly know about hockey? Dak is a former NHL player who loves the game but doesn’t really want to play again. Fate together in the sweetest way. Despite Miranda’s misgivings, Dak is perfect for her. Her heart knows it but her head won’t let her put aside her fears. Dak is a man who has learned from his wild rookie days and wants to guide new rookies away from the fast party life he knew so well. Together Dak and Miranda work well, professionally and privately. I loved everything about their love story and I look forward to reading the rest of this series. I highly recommend The Gingerbread Cafe.

The Gingerbread Cafe will be available in paperback and eBook in November 2023

A Pinch of Commitment: a marriage of convenience or a recipe for love

A Pinch of Commitment is the second book in the Veils and Vows series by Jean Oram. Ethan Mattson is trying to sell his restaurant and catering business so he can devote his full time to his technical business. Lily Harper, his sister’s childhood friend, comes back to town with a proposition. They get married and after a year, they quickly divorce where she can take the restaurant and catering businesses off his hands while saving them both lots of money. He agrees, vowing not to love her as falling love is not a part of their deal. However, the girl he once knew is now a gorgeous woman who has a nasty ex that won’t leave her alone. Lily has had a crush on Ethan since he rescued her from a mud puddle and school bullies. But she is determined to be strictly business so she can finally have the restaurant of her dreams. Of course, she begins to fall in love. Can their arrangement be the recipe for love?

A Pinch of Commitment is a sweet romance. Ethan is a broken man, both physically and spiritually. Lily is desperate to find a home and belong. Their marriage of convenience seems to be the perfect situation for them. Their sudden marriage raises some eyebrows to the residents of Blueberry Springs, of course, Ethan and Lily try their best to make it look legit. In the process, they begin to fall in love. I loved the character of Gramps as he seems to see through their deception. Overall, I enjoyed A Pinch of Commitment and look forward to reading the rest of the series. I read a lot of criticisms stating that this story isn’t real life, that the town is too perfect. Yes, some of the story elements are a bit far fetched. However, I read most romances for escape. If I wanted real life, I would find a book about real life. If you enjoy small town romances with a happily ever after ending, I recommend A Pinch of Commitment.

The Surprise Wedding: a fun romance for a lazy afternoon

The Surprise Wedding is the first book in the Veils and Vows series by Jean Oram. Devon Mattson is desperate to get his ex-girlfriend's attention. He’d rather not have to talk with her but he needs her help to save Blueberry Springs, his hometown. Olivia Carrington isn’t happy that Devon shows up at her private event. But he offers a solution that she is desperately looking for that could save her company’s organic cosmetic line. As the current mayor is running an election on a proposed dam, Devon decides to run against him to stop the dam. Olivia offers to help him with his image as the dam would ruin her chance to find what she needs for her cosmetics. Now they must play nice in order to achieve their goals including faking an engagement. When they get caught up in the charade, they are forced to confront their past. Will they ruin their chances of success? Or will their fake engagement lead to a real wedding?

I recently read a book that dealt with a pretty heavy topic and I felt the need for a light hearted, fun story and The Surprise Wedding was it. The Surprise Wedding is a sweet romance with a bit of drama. A fast read, it is perfect for a laid back, lazy afternoon, I was able to read it in a few hours. I enjoyed the characters, especially Devon and Olivia. Their drama, history and attraction to each other made for a great story of re-falling. love. I enjoyed their banter. At first, their angry snaps at each other to their flirty, carefree banter was great. I also enjoyed their heart to heart talk as they confront their past, their hurts and their wrongs. It was heartfelt and real. I look forward to continuing the series and visiting Blueberry Springs again. If you like sweet romance set in a fun small town, I recommend The Surprise Wedding.

The Surprise Wedding is available in paperback and eBook.

Whiskey and Gumdrops and Rum and Raindrops: two romance novels that leave a lot to be desired

Today’s review will be a double review. I read the first two books in the Blueberry Springs Sweet Romance series by Jean Oram.

Whiskey and Gumdrops is the first book in this series. It is the story of Mandy Mattson who lives in the small town of Blueberry Springs. She watches from outside a church as her ex-boyfriend, Oz, marries her rival, Beth. While she hides in the bushes, she is sprayed by a skunk and she runs to her best friend, Frankie Smith, for help. Frankie is her best friend, but he has always wanted more, and Mandy keeps him at arm’s length because she doesn’t want to jeopardize the one relationship she relies on the most. One day, Mandy gets the idea to open her own business and soon she is in full swing. She meets with Seth Freedly, CEO of Wrap It Up, a healthy fast food restaurant and signs on as a franchisee. Soon, major hurdles are in her way, both professionally and personally. Will she be able to finally open her business? Will Frankie finally convince her to take their relationship to the next level? Will she allow herself the risk for love?

Whiskey and Gumdrops was a good book. It moved along at a steady pace; however, the plot was a bit predictable with no real shocking twists or reveals. There was no real emotional impact for me. I didn’t really care for Mandy. I found myself siding more with Frankie. All the characters were likeable, and I could envision these people existing in the real world; but there was no real wow factor. The conflicts didn’t seem like conflicts at all but inconveniences that the characters are able to find a solution rather quickly. Overall, the book was not bad. I enjoyed it but it wasn’t a book I will probably read again. I would consider this book a beach book that you could easy read and put down without any urgency to finish.

Rum and Raindrops is the second book of this series. It is the story of Jennifer “Jen” Kulak, a woman who is running from her past while trying to rebuild her life in Blueberry Springs. She is the local nature guide. The story opens with the small town being threatened by forest fire that seems to have been started by Jen when she was camping the days prior. Rob Raine is the fire investigator who has been sent to determine the cause of the fire. Sparks fly immediately between Jen and Rob but the two need to remain distant as the investigation is still on going. They are thrown together when Rob and his sister, Dina, are a part of her weekend canoe trip. Dina and Jen become friends and she becomes more and more open about her past as it seems that her past is trying to find her. Will Jen be cleared from suspicion? Will they catch the fire starter? Will Rob and Jen ever find a timing to begin their relationship?

Rum and Raindrops was a better story than the first book, but it still had it’s cringe worthy moments. There were conversations between women that were stereotypical women talks about orgasms and “banged so good you’ll forget your own name.” Ugh, really?!?! Not all women speak like this! That aside, the tension between Jen and Rob was much better. The conflict of interest added with the undeniable sparks made for a good story. However, the plot was once again predictable and some questions that were raised in the book were not answered. Maybe they will be answered in future books. Overall, this book, like the first one, is a quick beach read that doesn’t require too much effort or emotional investment.
