Dancing with the Sun: a fight for survival brings recovery from the past

Dancing with the Sun by Kay Bratt is the story of Sadie Harlan, through a life and death situation, learns to confront the past and move forward with her life. One weekend while her husband Tom is away on a camping trip, Sadie realizes that items are missing from their home in South Carolina. Fearing the worst, Sadie books a flight and visits their daughter, Lauren, who is attending a summer internship in Yosemite. Lauren convinces to take a short hike into the park and despite her anxiety, Sadie follows her. Soon they get hopelessly lost and a sudden rainstorm catches them unaware and unprepared. Their short hike turns into a fight for their lives as they search for food, water and the way back. They face injuries, exhaustion and natural predators. While facing almost certain death, Sadie and Lauren open up to each other about the past and their future plans. Will they be able to get out of the park alive? Will Sadie discover strength and resourcefulness? Will Sadie finally forgive herself and learn to let go of the past?

One of my worst fears is being lost in the wilderness without supplies and without a way home. Dancing with the Sun certainly is a story to remind people to always be prepared when going into the wild. On a deeper level, it is a great story about a woman who realizes that she’s holding onto the past and refuses to allow herself to love and be loved and experience the fullness of life. When faced with the possibility of death, Sadie learns an important lesson about letting go and moving on. I was able to finish this book in a few hours as it drew me in and refused to be put down. I had to finish. I had to know if Sadie and Lauren survive. I highly recommend Dancing with the Sun.

The Great Alone: where one mistake can cost you everything

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah is the story of Lenora “Leni” Allbright and her life in the Alaska wilderness. The story opens in 1974, Leni is 13 years old and her parents, Ernt and Coraline “Cora” Allbright are fighting. Her dad is a Vietnam vet and POW who has had a hard time adjusting to life after the war and has lost another job. Things look bleak until a letter arrives which offers the family a new start in Alaska. While life is hard as they learn to live in the wilderness, they are helped by their neighbors, Large Marge, who runs the local grocery story, and The Walker family, whose son, Matthew, is the same age as Leni. Through trial and error, the family learns to live in their new home. However, her father’s demons has seemed to follow them to Alaska and with the darkness and isolation of Alaska wilderness, Leni must learn to fight back and trust her instincts.

The Great Alone is another amazing story by Ms. Hannah. It has heartbreaking drama, love and hopes for survival. The story immediately pulls you in by Leni’s narration. The reader will laugh with her, cry with her and feel her fear as it grips the heart. It is a page turner as you cannot wait to see if she survives. Ms. Hannah’s descriptions of the Alaska wilderness and its cold winters are so vivid, you can almost feel the icy wind. Behind the stunning beauty of Alaska, there is a harshness that very few learn to survive. I highly, highly recommend The Great Alone.

The Captive Heart: romance and survival in the wilds of the American Colonies

The Captive Heart by Michelle Griep is a love adventure story set in the wilderness of the American colonies. It opens in London, 1770 with Eleanor Morgan being dismissed from her governess position for her safety. Her only option is a governess position in the colonies. However, the plan goes awry and she ends up married to widow, Samuel Heath, in order to take care of his young daughter, Grace. Samuel, a frontiersman with a hidden past and a not so hidden enemy, is a dark and mysterious man. Eleanor must learn to live in the wilderness with its dangers at every turn as well live with a man she resists getting close to. When Eleanor hears the rumors about his past, she is confronted with the man who knows and the man people whispers about. Can she trust her heart and open her heart to this man? Or must she run when she has the chance?

The Captive Heart is a great love story set in the American colonies as the resistance to the British crown are brewing. It is a wonderful story in a historical setting. A romance which leave you on the edge of your seat. There were scenes which leave steal your breath away as the suspense, danger and romance heightens. You will love Samuel and Eleanor as they slowly fall in love and you will find yourself urging them to acknowledging their feelings and cheer when they finally do. I highly recommend The Captive Heart.
